The Awakening of Faith contains an important concept, that of “one mind opens two doors.”
《大乘起信论》中有一个很重要的理论,就是“一心开二门”。
“One mind” refers to our own mind. The “two doors” refers to the “door of things as they are,” the mind of sentient beings or suchness, and to the “door of birth and death.”
“一心”就是指我们这个心;“二门”是指真如门和生灭门。
The door of things as they are, zhenru men, is enlightenment, the pure tranquillity of the mind.
“真如门”就是觉悟,是心的纯洁清净;
The door of birth and death is fantasy, where thoughts are in constant circulation and trammelled by desire.
“生灭门”就是迷妄,是念头不断地流转,不断地被欲望所纠缠。
The significance of one mind two doors is that it brings us to recognise the following principle:
一心二门的意义,在于让我们认清这样一个道理:
In a state of enlightenment we possess a pure mind, the mind of the door of things as they are; in a state of bewilderment our mind is impure and is the mind of the door of birth and death.
在觉悟的时候,我们拥有的是一颗清纯的心,这是心的真如门;
在迷失的时候,我们具有的是一颗污浊的心,这是心的生灭门。
Throughout life, even during the course of a single day, we go in and out of these two doors, one moment enlightened and the next unable to withstand temptation.
在人的一生乃至一天中,我们经常会在这两扇门中转来转去,一方面觉悟清醒,一方面又难耐诱惑。
It can be seen from this that the origins of joy and suffering and the causes of uprightness and depravity lie only in our own minds.
由此可见,痛苦和快乐的根源,提升和堕落的原因,不在别处,就在于我们的内心。
The nurture of this mind leads to instant enlightenment.
照看好了这颗心,当下就是觉悟。
It is the mind that determines whether you go to heaven or hell.
去天堂,还是去地狱,都取决于我们的心。
