At his moment of enlightenment Sakyamuni said: “All sentient beings possess the wisdom and virtuous aspects of the Buddha but because of delusions and attachments cannot manifest them.” (Sayings of Dahui)
Since delusions and attachments have overshadowed the original mind and true nature, they must be jettisoned so that one’s original sense of enlightenment may re-emerge.
As seen by Zen, they are not external but come from the heart.
We are like silkworms endlessly spinning out threads of affliction and desire into a thick cocoon, an attachment that rigidly encases us.
Delusions and attachments tie us and that is loss.
Jettisoning delusions and attachments and gaining independence is escape.
The Platform Sutra says: “Comprehend and all sentient beings become Buddha. Fail to comprehend and Buddha then becomes as all.”
The states of enlightenment and bewilderment are the products of our own mind.
