    The True Seeker after Gold

There is the story of two Mexicans who were panning for gold on the banks of the Mississippi river.

The men separated at a river junction since one believed that more gold was to be found by panning on the Arkansas river whilst the other thought that the opportunities to make a fortune were greater on the Ohio river.

Ten years later, sure enough, the one on the Ohio river made his fortune by finding a large quantity of gold dust there.

He built quays and laid down roads and the place where he had stopped became a large town.

Pittsburgh beside the Ohio river is now commercially prosperous and industrially developed and has benefited from its early opening up.

On the face of it the one who followed the Arkansas river was not so fortunate. There was no news of him from the moment that he left his friend.

Some said that he was already buried amongst the fish and others that he had returned to Mexico.

55 years later a natural gold nugget weighing 27 kilos caused a sensation in Pittsburgh.

A journalist investigated the nugget and said in his report: This, the largest gold nugget in America, was not found in Pittsburgh but was found by a young man in the fishpond behind his house in the state of Arkansas.

His grandfather’s diary showed that he had thrown the nugget into the fishpond himself.

Subsequently, a magazine published the diary, a passage of which said:

Yesterday, I found another very large gold nugget in the river. Should I go into town and sell it?

If I do that then crowds of people will make their way here and the log cabin that I and my wife built with our own hands, the vegetable patch that we dug with the sweat of our brows, the fishpond at the back, the woodpile at the side, the loyal dog, the smell of beef stew, the sparrows, the sky, the trees, the grass and the peace and independence here will no longer exist.

I would rather see the splash of water from this gold nugget as it is thrown into the fishpond than watch helplessly as the life that we have made for ourselves here disappears in front of our eyes. Our life here is too tranquil and too beautiful.

The 1860s saw the emergence of millionaires in America and the widespread pursuit of money but this gold-panner threw away the gold he had gained.

However, we can say that amongst all those who panned for gold it was only he who found it.

However much you spent, could you buy a life as tranquil as an idyll or the treasure of family life as happy and fortunate as this?
